|Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative Session 02: Effective Communication Techniques
One might reasonably assume that interacting with a pregnant or breastfeeding mother might be the same as interacting with any other client. However, unlike clients who have a disease condition or a problem to solve, most pregnant mothers need to make a feeding decision, and most breastfeeding mothers need to have the wherewithal to follow through on their decision to breastfeed. As such, it’s critical to avoid data-gathering techniques which elicit little information, discourage conversation, or a judgmental approach. Similarly, it’s critical to avoid tactics that undermine the mother’s confidence or directives that are more of a command than a suggestion.
