Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative Session 10: Infants and Mothers with Special Needs

$32.00

Overview:
Interestingly, the same people who assume that breastfeeding is instinctual for nearly all babies often assume that breastfeeding is difficult or impossible for babies or mothers who have special circumstances. Many special circumstances may arise; the infant who was born prematurely, or the infant who has a congenital condition certainly has different capabilities and limitations than the healthy, term infant. Even newborns with less threatening situations—multiple gestation, or even conditions like hypoglycemia, or tandem breastfeeding—require special management. Maternal circumstances, too, such as disease or medication, are often presumed to preclude breastfeeding. In truth, very few situations contraindicate breastfeeding.
