When Ethics and Evidence Collide: Solving Breastfeeding Problems
Goal: To enable health care providers to integrate ethical standards and principles into lactation practice.
Objectives:
- Describe obstacles to and facilitators of the classic ethical principles associated with health care.
- Recognize how the sale and marketing of commercial feeding products poses a conflict of interest and an ethical dilemma for the health care provider.
- Debate whether informed consent should be obtained for common perinatal practices that have a negative impact on breastfeeding (e.g., supplementation, circumcision, maternal epidural anesthesia).
- Using real-life scenarios, identify possible obstacles to ethical decisions and choose ethical courses of action.
- Recognize and avoid common violations of intellectual property rights.
